Mathematics Lab Classes within the First Year of Aerospace Engineering Curricula

Abstract

Aerospace Engineering is studied in the School of Design Engineering at the Technical University of Valencia (Universitat Politècnica de València, UPV) where innovative teaching methods based on technology are continuously promoted. In this way, within this framework, UPV set up an educational platform, PoliformaT. By taking advantage of this technological change and understanding it as an opportunity to move on and try to improve and modernize the learning possibilities of our students, we started its use within our lab Mathematics classes in the first year of the Aerospace Engineering degree in 2007/2008. During the following years we extended the use of PoliformaT to all lab classes and their corresponding exams by using the MATHEMATICA software which is available at UPV thanks to a Campus license. Nowadays we have fully implemented the use of the platform in lab classes and exams. Students’ motivation and perception to the subject has changed with the use of these new technologies and they are performing and learning satisfactorily. As a consequence their outcome has improved compared to that in the past. Results and opinions from the students have been obtained and are presented.
