Abstract

The Fast Fourier Transform (FFT) is the key component in many signal processing algorithms. For example, it is used in the implementation of the modulation technique Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM). This paper explains the real-time implementation of a high throughput parallel pipelined FFT for Optical OFDM using FPGA devices. The size of the FFT can be fixed, or configured at run-time, and it can take next values: 16, 64, 256 and 1024. For a FPGA Virtex-6 VLX240T-1 device, and using a 16-bit data word length, we achieved throughputs up to 6.56 Gsps for the run-time configurable size implementation, and between 6.71 to 6.97 Gsps for the fixed size implementation. The entire design has been done with System Generator blockset of Simulink to allow a rapid prototyping implementation.
