Coexistence of LTE and DVB Technologies in the Digital Dividend Band. A contribution to transmission parameters optimization.

Abstract

Driven by the ever-increasing popularity and demand of multimedia contents, wireless traffic is expected to increase by 1000 times in the next 10 years. Thus, with the spectrum liberation called Digital Dividend (DD), obtained by the Digital Terrestrial Television (DTT) implantation and the analog TV emissions switch off, some new bands are being assigned to fourth generation 4G services: Long Term Evolution (LTE). Some problems emerged when it was observed that 4G LTE cellular networks could interfere DTT signals. In this paper, we analyze this particular problem by observing how much LTE signals are interfering over DTT, varying different parameters of both technologies. To quantify the interference problem, several protection ratios were calculated as a function of the LTE link that is located in the lower part of the assigned band, i.e. downlink or uplink. Also, several coexistence scenarios are considered, where the calculated protection ratios can be extrapolated to evaluate particular cases and to perform planning studies
