Transformational acoustic metamaterials based on pressure gradients

Abstract

By applying a homogenization process to the acoustic velocity potential wave equation, we connect current metafluid technology with the properties prescribed by analogue transformation acoustics. An example concerning a periodic array of cylinders embedded in a fluid is presented in detail. A careful analysis of the results unveils the difference between metamaterials designed via potential- and pressure-based transformational approaches. Our findings show the potential of metafluids based on pressure gradients both for building transformation media and for achieving supersonic propagation speeds.
