A 60-GHz LTCC rectangular dielectric resonator antenna design with characteristic modes theory

Abstract

This communication presents a method to design a compact rectangular DRA (RDRA) using the TCM for ISM-band at 60GHz. The RDRA is designed with low permittivity and excited by a microstrip feeder with a rectangular aperture coupled slot. This excites the TE111 mode inside the RDRA to radiate as a magnetic dipole. We have adapted the design procedure such as to fully exploit the possibilities of the LTCC technology with the minimum required number of layers and Ferro A6-M material. The proposed antenna has an impedance bandwidth of 33% for S11<-10dB. The obtained results show that the radiation bandwidth, determined by 10-dB return loss, of the proposed antenna can be as large as 20GHz or about 33% centered at about 60GHz.
