ENTREPRENEURSHIP and UNIVERSITY THIRD MISSION

Abstract

The landscape after the Global economic crisis in many countries, specially (but not only) in the South of Europe, is a mixture of discouragement and opportunities. In this situation entrepreneurs have a very important role to play, not as the panacea to all the problems but without doubt as the active creators of the companies that will build the future. Universities, with its important role in the knowledge society, also have a role to play in this building process. This role covers from the adequate definition of pensums, to the creation of an entrepreneur attitude in young graduates and the facilitation of the naissance of new knowledge based companies. The root for the responsibility of universities in this question is related with the Third Mission of the University, a Mission that includes the compromise of the Institutions with the solution of the main community problems, and the need for entrepreneurship is one of them. The case of Spain in analyzed in this lecture, presenting the general panorama and reviewing some good practices in the University role in this field.
