Abstract

Conservation principles are commonly assumed to be deontologic in nature. However, pragmatist or utilitarian ethics are much better fit to the kind of dilemmas faced by conservators; in fact, it is this kind of ethics that is (routinely, though unrecognized) applied by conservators.
