Development and chareccterization of biodegradable blends of PHB/PCL for food packaging appliations

Abstract

In present study, blends of polyhydroxybutyrate (PHB) with polycaprolactone (PCL) with different ratios by weight of PHB / PCL (100/0, 75/25, 50/50, 25/75, 0/100) have been prepared. These plastics are of great interest because both are biodegradable. Blends were prepared by melt blending (in a twin-screw extruder) followed by injection molding. Morphology and mechanical properties of blends with different weight proportions of PHB / PCL have been studied. The results show that PCL acts as a polymeric plasticizer and increases flexibility and ductility in blends as it increases its quantity. It is also observed that both biodegradable polymers are immiscible over the entire range, differentiating both phases in all blends.
