Epoxidized cottonseed oil (ecso) as a plasticizer for poly (vinyl chloride)

Abstract

In this research project, a new environmentally friendly plasticizer has been used as plasticizer for poly vinyl chloride (PVC). Epoxidized cottonseed oil (ECSO) has been obtained after 8 hours at 70ºC using acetic acid, sulphuric acid, and hydrogen peroxide. Mixing the appropriate amounts of PVC with ECSO (70 parts per hundred parts of resin) and control the curing conditions, it is possible to obtain cured plastisols with good mechanical properties. The curing conditions were studied for between 7.5 and 17.5 min, with a constant temperature of 190ºC. The influence of the curing conditions on the plastisols was followed by mechanical properties and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) of fractured surfaces from tensile test.
