Abstract

Information management is vital in organisations. Because of the intangible nature of information, however, measuring and evaluating how organisations manage this resource sometimes proves difficult. The importance of information technologies in information management means that the majority of studies focus excessively on technology without correctly evaluating the way information systems function within the organisation and without addressing the effectiveness and use of information in business activity. Focusing on the information life cycle, this research considers both technical and organisational aspects to build a simple measurement tool that evaluates how organisations manage information. This scale acts as a generic framework to evaluate and detect problems in information management during information acquisition, treatment and diffusion at different operational levels (i.e., tacit and strategic) of decision-making.
