DRAWING CITIES: EL DIBUJO COMO HERRAMIENTA DE APRENDIZAJE Y DE COMUNICACIÓN DE LA CIUDAD

Abstract

“Drawing cities” aims to use drawing as a tool to learn and to tell the city. If we take John Berger’s definition of drawing, then this act is a way to understand and rediscover things that we constantly are looking at. In this case, the observed object is the city. Such an approach helps to visualize in a very dynamic way the complex evolution of the urban fabric, and at the same time, it achieves to involve the audience in the construction of the sketch-city. Focusing on a practical experience, “Drawing Cities: El Cabanyal” performed in Valencia on July 2014, this communication will argue: how value can be added to the urban morphology by contextualizing its structure in a temporal and geographical framework, how conflicts can be detected in its evolution through the process of drawing, and how useful results can be generated to discuss and propose solutions. The final challenge would be to communicate this knowledge to an audience without any professional experience in urban planning.
