Simulation of a commercial Siemens PET scanner using the Monte Carlobased GATE code

Abstract

In this work, a computational model of the Siemens biograph 2 CT/PET scanner located at “Hospital Casa de Salud” (Valencia, Spain) was elaborated using GATE (Geant4 application for tomographic emission). NEMA standard NU-2 2001 protocol was used in order to validate this computational model. The parameters used for the model validation were: the spatial resolution, the scatter coincidence rate and the random coincidence rate. These parameters were selected since they are key parameters for the assessment of PET scanners performance. The considered definition for these parameters was the definition given in NEMA standard NU-2 2001. The different NEMA protocol tests were simulated using the built computational model. The values of these parameters, were compared to the parameters obtained experimentally or provided by the scanner supplier. Moreover, a particular phantom acquisition was simulated using the computational model. The reconstructed image was compared to the experimental phantom. Finally, the energy spectrum of the photons detected by the scanner detectors was analyzed. All these verifications showed that the elaborated computational model behaved as the real scanner.
