CONGRESO WALKING TOURS IN THE CITY OF VALENCIA CEMETERY

Abstract

The first of November, at nine in the morning, the city of Valencia Cemetery opens its doors to the public. Life and the living take hold of the sacred ground on this November the first, but following the festivities of the Day of the Dead, silence returns to the place whose peace is disturbed each year by the festival. Since the 8th November 2008, the City Cemetery has been a designated member of ASCE (Association of Significant Cemeteries of Europe), an association which protects more than 179 approved Significant Cemeteries across 22 different European countries. The Museum of Silence is an open-air museum inside the city of Valencia Cemetery. It consists of a walking tour of the cemetery; ¿The Route of Silence¿, taking in the tombs, graves and pantheons of the great and the good of the city, but the tour also seeks to introduce us to the world of ¿Funeral Architecture¿, a completely unknown field of architecture, one of the architectural types which has been largely neglected by students and studies, and, one which defines the artistic and economic time and place of a period, and which architecturally enshrines all of the ¿Fine Arts¿. The City Cemetery is entering a new era, one that, despite this being the Domain of the Dead, is much nearer to the living
