Abstract
The European Union, FAO and other international organizations are putting special emphasis in the necessary impulse of marine aquaculture and local fishing as two important axes to reach the environmental and social sustainability. Nevertheless, both activities often relate of troubled form. This dynamic contrasts with the policies and recommendations on governance and coastal management. In them, there is an explicit recognition of the value that local actors have to contribute to the resolution of many coastal problems. Centered in Valencia and Murcia, two European regions representative of the presence of both activities, and through a qualitative methodology (semi-structured interviews), this paper explores possible ways of collaboration and integrated management able of housing the demands and expectations of different groups involved in local fisheries, particularly: scientists, managers and small-scale fishermen.
