Spanish regions in agri-food world markets

Abstract

This paper evaluates the main results of the agri-food foreign sector of the Autonomous Communities during the period 2009 - 2012, calculating trade competitiveness indicators and analyzing their breakdown by subsector. Their findings reveal that regions have very different developments, although a general improvement of sector performance is perceived, if by improving increasing the positive difference between exports and imports. In this sense, it highlights the need for the Autonomous Communities shape their policies to boost their good results or to counteract those factors that are hindering its development potential, all in a context in which the short, medium and long-term look encouraging due to a set of factors that are discussed, such as the depreciation of the euro, the Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership with the US and increased international demand for food.
