Competency-Based Models in Personnel Selection: Trends and Further Research

Abstract

Competency-based models provide a structured approach to personnel selection by defining the knowledge, skills and behaviors essential for job performance. This research analyzes their application in human resources management, specifically in personnel selection. The methodology involved conducting a structured search in scientific databases, filtering and labelling publications, and identifying relevant publications for the topic. The analysis identified four model typologies: Role Requirements, Talent Optimization, Competency Assessment, and Generic and Flexible approaches. The results highlight their widespread adoption across sectors, particularly in public institutions. While competency definition is widely used, weighting and levelling are less integrated. Competency models enhance the accuracy of competency assessment, improving personnel selection, offering human resources directors and managers a practical framework for decision-making, and aligning human resources strategies with organizational goals. Finally, this study concludes by addressing gaps and proposing areas for further research.
