Resumen

The main objective of ScaLVAD is to develop an spart highly efficiency, compact and easily scalable LVAD, compatible with pediatrics. A demonstrator will be manufactured with the aim of achieving a Technology Readiness Level (TRL) of 4-5. To ensure ScaLVAD contributes to scientific and technological advancement, the LVAD must meet the following requirements: ¿ Understanding the scale effects on the performance of LVAD in terms of efficiency, power consumption, thrombogenicity, pulsatility and other relevant parameters. Then, generating a easily scalable design compatible with pediatrics. ¿ Minimize the device size, allowing for its use in both adult and pediatric patient. As a project goal, ScaLVAD demonstrator dimension will be below 4cm x 4cm x 5cm, which is more than 50% smaller than HM3, and would make it usable in pediatric patients of 1 year. ¿ Reducing energy consumption, which will decrease the frequency of battery charges and their size, resulting in a more reliable and comfortable system for the patients. The total power consumption, including hydraulic power, device control, and magnetic levitation, should be below 4 watts. To achieve this, the device should have a fluid dynamic efficiency of at least 70% and an electrical efficiency of about 90% increasing battery duration by, at least, 50%. ¿ Minimizing thrombogenicity, thereby reducing the need for anticoagulant therapy, which would be a direct consequence of the enhancements on fluid efficiency. ¿ Introducing sensors for real-time monitoring and a smart control system, which will aid physicians in predicting possible device malfunctions and will allow adaptative performance of the ScaLVAD to different activity and health scenarios of the patient. ¿ Designing an optimal controller that allows the device to work at a constant rotational speed while also introducing a physiological pulse. ¿ To evaluate the possibility of wireless power transmission to the LVAD. ¿ The project, developed by public entities, aims to reduce the cost of LVADs by improving the efficiency and effectiveness of implantation, manufacturing, and usage, making it more accessible and affordable for the Spanish public health system and its patients.
